Introduction to Sailing


OBJECTIVE

To discover the sport of sailing in a relaxed setting with a competent coach to insure safety & enjoyment.


PREREQUISITES

None.





Basic Crew Standard

OBJECTIVE


To be able to act as competent crew while cruising safely in familiar waters aboard a sloop rigged keelboat of 6 - 10 metres in moderate wind and sea conditions by day.


PREREQUISITES

None.


Basic Cruising Standard

OBJECTIVE

To be able to act as competent crew while cruising safely in familiar waters aboard a sloop rigged keelboat of 6 - 10 metres in moderate wind and sea conditions by day.


PREREQUISITES

None.




Intermediate Crew Standard

OBJECTIVE

To be able to cruise safely in familiar waters as both skipper and crew of a sailing yacht of 8 - 12 meters in moderate wind and sea conditions by day. Emphasizes on-the-water skills at a level acceptable for bareboat chartering.

PREREQUISITES

Basic Crew Standard or Basic Cruising Standard.

It is recommended the student have a recognized first aid certificate and a VHF radio operator’s certificate.

Note: To maximize the likelihood of successfully completing the Intermediate Cruising Standard, a student should have:
a) Had experience as skipper of at least ten day sails (or equivalent), and
b) Applied the knowledge and practiced the skills in the Basic Cruising Standard.


Intermediate Cruising Standard

OBJECTIVE

To be able to cruise safely in familiar waters as both skipper and crew of a sailing yacht of 8 - 12 meters in moderate wind and sea conditions by day. Emphasizes on-the-water skills at a level acceptable for bareboat chartering.

PREREQUISITES

Basic Cruising Standard.

Coastal Navigation Standard

OBJECTIVES

To be able to demonstrate the navigational theory required to safely navigate a sailing cruiser in coastal or inland waters. The concepts are practically introduced in the Intermediate standard and practically tested in the Advanced standard. The standard is recommended to be completed prior to the Intermediate standard.

PREREQUISITES

None.
This is one of the standards required by CYA as a prerequisite to taking the
Advanced Cruising Standard. You can attain this standard by passing the CYA Coastal Navigation Examination.





Advanced Cruising Standard

OBJECTIVE

To be able to act safely as skipper and crew of a sailing cruiser of 8 - 15 metres, operating by day and night in coastal or inland water in any weather.

PREREQUISITES

Basic Cruising, Intermediate Cruising and Coastal Navigation Standards; Red Cross or St. John Ambulance Emergency First Aid Certificate and a VHF radio certificate (Radio Operator's Restricted Certificate - Maritime Voluntary). Minimum course time for teaching this Standard is six days.

Note: To maximize the likelihood of successfully completing the Advanced Cruising Standard, a student should have:
a) had experience as a skipper equivalent to at least two seasons or twenty days of cruising, and
b) applied the knowledge and practiced the skills in the
Intermediate Cruising and Coastal Navigation Standards.


Advanced Navigation Standard

OBJECTIVES

To be able to safely navigate a vessel in all conditions of visibility and weather in accordance with a prepared passage plan, applying the principles and techniques of safe navigation by electronic instruments and radar.

PREREQUISITES

Coastal Navigation Standard and Intermediate Cruising Standard or Intermediate Powerboat Standard.

 

Celestial Navigation Standard

OBJECTIVE

To be able to demonstrate the celestial navigation theory required to safely navigate a sailing cruiser on an offshore passage. The Standard is applied practically in the Offshore Cruising Standard.

PREREQUISITES

Coastal Navigation



Offshore Cruising Standard

OBJECTIVE

To be able to safely act as skipper & crew in a sailing cruiser on an offshore passage using Celestial Navigation.

PREREQUISITES

Advanced Cruising Standard and Celestial Navigation Standard, VHF Radio certificate(Radio Operator's Restricted Certificate-Maritime Voluntary, Red Cross or St. John Ambulance Standard First Aid Certificate and a nationally recognized certificate in CPR-Level "B" or higher. Completing the Advanced Navigation Standard is highly recommended




Pleasure Craft Operator Card



Since September 15th, 2002, Federal regulations require any person operating a powered vessel of less than 4 meters in length, to have a Pleasure Craft Operator's Card.


Since September 1998, any person born after April 1, 1983 needs a Pleasure Craft Operator's Card to operate a powered vessel. By September 2009, every Canadian, of any age, will need a Card. Don't wait until the last minute…take the course now and get your Canadian Coast Guard Accredited, CYA Pleasure Craft Operator's Card.


You have three options:


1. Challenge Exam - Register for the test in your area
2. Refresher Course - For those who have taken boating courses before
3. Complete Course - The best choice and one that every boating family should take together

For more information on what is acceptable as proof of competency, please check out The Canadian Coast Guard website.


If you have completed a CYA course prior to April 1, 1999 and have documentation, it may be used as proof of competency. These are the courses that are acceptable:


·  Basic (or Intermediate, or Advanced) Coastal Cruising


·  Basic (or Intermediate) Power Boating


·  Basic Outboarding


A Sail Canada Certified Instructor has the best way to teach all you will need to know, to pass the Canadian Coast Guard approved test.
